The Effect of Streptomycin on the Production of Pyocines of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa

Abstract
For the purpose to observe the effect of streptomycin on pyocine production of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, this drug was added to both liquid and solid pyocine testing media and pyocines were assayed with high streptomycin resistant and moderate resistant indicators.
It was found on the blood trypticase soy agar that, streptomycin enhanced pyocine productions against indicators of moderately streptomycin resistant strains, whereas this was inapparent against indicators of highly resistant strains. This characteristic was particularly obvious when tested with Gillies and Govan¢¥s indicators.
The elevation of pyocine titer by streptomycin was seemed to he expressed by direct growth inhibition combined with an undetectable amounts of pyocine on indicators rather than the effect of pyocine induction of test strains on the solid media. The concentration of drug in the media showed no clear cut result.
Pyocine lysates prepared from liquid media were somewhat differ from that formed on solid media. The spectrum of pyocine patterns produced on solid media was broader and rather unstable as compared to pyocine lysate. This inconsistency of pyocine characters in both media reflect the unstable nature of pyocine reproducibility encountered during pyocine typing.
The enhancing effect of streptomycin on pyocine lysate was also observed in two cases out of three test strains. This enhancement in liquid media was quantitative in pattern to indicators in contrast to both qualitative and quantitative natures in solid media.
